LEARN MORE ABOUT THE TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE:
"I think that's something that we maybe think as bloggers, that "oh that person over there already did it, so I can't do it too". And it's like, no, you can go do it! Just make sure that you're doing your own take on it!"
Discussed in this episode...
What inspired a blogger to create a magazine?
Miranda shares with us how her background in and love of print journalism inspired the idea of an actual magazine. With huge names like Martha Stewart producing magazine issues dedicated entirely to Halloween, she knew that there was a market for it!
Where did she start?
She really wanted to create all original content for the magazine; themes inspired by what she shares on her blog, but nothing that had been posted there yet! Before actually creating any content, Miranda polled her readers to find out what they would like to see in a magazine with her theme. From those polls, she got all kinds of ideas for the first issue, for her blog, and for next year's magazine!
What are some things she wouldn't do again?
International shipping turned out to be a bit of a fiasco and Miranda shares a few lessons along those lines that she learned the hard way. It's important to give yourself grace for the mistakes that you made, but asking for help with certain aspects can help to keep those mistakes to a minimum. Miranda also shared why, next time around, she'll be hiring an editor.
How much time does it take to create a magazine?
Even though this is something that she had wanted to do for a while, Miranda didn't really start working on it until August! With encouragement from friends in the blogging community, she created this in less than 4 weeks! That is not a timeline she would repeat or recommend but just goes to show what you can accomplish when you are hustling. She plans to give herself two months to create the next issue.
A few more questions I asked:
- How did you approach advertising or sponsorships?
- How much did you sell the magazine for?
- Did you hit your sales goal and what was your profit?
- Would you recommend this magazine idea to other bloggers?
