"This is a journey. It is something that takes a long time. But it is one of those things that is going to be worth it. Because if any of those things I mentioned, in the beginning, sound appealing, (passive income, making money from ads, selling your own products, anything like that), and you're thinking "I would love to make money while I sleep or while I go on vacation", then you want to invest your time into SEO! And be patient with it."
Discussed in this episode...
What is SEO!
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is basically what Google searches your blog for in order to send people results! Search engine optimization means optimizing things on your website, in order for Google to find your website and suggest it to people. When someone goes to search for something like a "homemade yellow cake recipe", the goal is that your blog post is the one that pops up in the top results! Ideally, you want to show up on that first page, right?! In order for us to make that happen, we have to do SEO.
Why does it matter?
This will not only will SEO help people find you when searching a topic, but the possibilities are endless when you are able to increase your page views! You can increase your income through ads, brand partnerships, affiliates, or strictly selling your own products. There are so many ways that you can make money when you have a lot of page views! This also allows you to really rely on your own brand growth, which means not having to rely on social media or even brands for your income. A lot of the pain points that we hear consistently are frustrations with social media, with algorithms, and with brands not wanting to pay what you're worth. Good SEO allows you to take a step back and say, "that's okay. I don't have to stress about brand partnerships because I have these other sources of revenue."
What is a Keyword?
A keyword, or a key phrase as you'll also hear, is the words or phrases that tell Google what your blog post is about. The biggest trick to all of this is finding the keywords that you can rank for. So, using our homemade yellow cake example, you would have to figure out what the keywords are that people search for in order to find your blog post. It could be as simple as "homemade yellow cake mix", or "homemade yellow cake". However, there is a strategy to this and you want to use some tools when it comes to picking good keywords.
Where do we put Keywords?
There are multiple places that you want to put them!
Title
First, you want to put them in your title. A nice little trick here though is that this doesn't necessarily have to be in the blog post title that people actually see. So let's say you want to rank for "yellow cake mix". Maybe you want to have a different, slightly more catchy title like "the best cake mix for birthdays ever". But you still need that keyword to be in your "title". If you are using Yoast, it can be in your Yoast title instead! A little trick there.
URL
You want your keyword in the actual URL for your blog post!
Meta Description
The other place that you'll want to do it is in your meta description!
H1 & H2
You'll actually set an H1 and try to have it there, and you could also do it in an h2 (which is recommended).
Throughout your content
Of course, you want to be using it throughout your content as you're able!
Alt text
For any image that you use in the post, you'll want to put your keyword in the alt text.
Internal Linking
The last thing is internal linking. So this is kind of a strategy in general for SEO. If you reference something in your blog post that you've talked about in another blog post, you want to link that blog post. This helps with not only getting people to kind of bounce around on your site, but it'll also show Google that you may be becoming an expert in something. Using our "yellow cake mix" example; you can say something like "if you love this, but you're really wanting a chocolate recipe, then I've got the best chocolate cake recipe for you right here". And you link to your chocolate cake recipe. Then on that chocolate cake recipe, you also used keywords that you know you're going to rank for. Now all of sudden, Google is seeing your great keywords for multiple posts on a similar subject, and your ranking with them gets a boost. Pretty cool, right?
