What is SEO?
If you're looking to add more traffic to your site and get more eyes on your content, then you should be looking into your SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization. Search engines like Google will crawl your website in order to classify it in it's search results and allow searchers to find what they're looking for! Search engine optimization means optimizing pages/posts on your website, in order for Google to find your website and suggest it to people.
When someone goes to search for something like a "homemade yellow cake recipe", the goal is that your blog post is the one that pops up in the top results! Ideally, you want to show up on that first page, right?! In order for us to make that happen, we have to do SEO.
Why does Optimizing for Search Matter?
This will not only will SEO help people find you when searching a topic, but the possibilities are endless when you are able to increase your page views! Consider how you can increase your income with more traffic through:

This also allows you to really rely on your own brand growth, which means not having to rely on social media or even brands for your income. A lot of the pain points that we hear consistently are frustrations with social media, with algorithms, and with brands not wanting to pay what you're worth.
Good and strategic SEO allows you to take a step back and say, "that's okay. I don't have to stress about brand partnerships because I have these other sources of traffic and revenue streams."
How to Improve Your SEO
As you begin to dive into SEO and what all it entails, you have to understand all of the technical aspects of it as well. From keywords to meta descriptions and alt text to headings, let's dive into them all!
What is a Keyword?
You're likely going to want to start optimizing with a keyword or a key phrase, which is the word or phrase that tells Google what your blog post is about. The biggest trick to all of this is finding the keywords that you can rank for.
Let's go back to our homemade yellow cake example, consider the keywords that people would search for in order to find your blog post. It could be as simple as "homemade yellow cake mix", or "homemade yellow cake".
Keyword Tools for Bloggers
You want to find keywords that people are searching for, but also have a low competition. There are a few tools I've been using to find the right keywords for my content, including:
Where to Include Your Keywords in Blog Posts
The key to using keywords well is strategically placing them in the right places. Let's walk through where you should include your keyword or phrase.
Meta Title - This is the title that search engines pull for search results and rank your content. This defaults to the post title, but you can also change it within Yoast or your blogging platform's meta details.
URL - In the URL slug that comes after your domain, consider putting the keyword in there. You can customize the URL to whatever you want.
Meta Description - Your meta description is where search engines source what will be under the title in search results—this is customizable in Yoast or your blogging platform's meta details. By including your keyword in the meta description, it reiterates that your content is about that topic.
Heading Tags - Heading tags are often referred to as H1, H2, H3, and so on. It's recommended that you include your keyword in your H1 tag, which is typically what your blog post title is set as on most blogging platforms. Additionally, you can use H2 tags to support the content of your post.
Throughout your content - Using your keyword in the actual content of your blog post is also important!
Alt text - Within each of your images in your content, you have the option to add in alt-text. To help support your search engine optimization, you can include the keyword in your alt text, but it's recommended that it also describes the picture itself for accessibility.
Internal Linking - When you have content that relates to each other and you reference that content, make sure you link that content. This is an important strategy for connecting the pages of your website to show Google that your site has more content relevant to this blog post about that specific keyword. This helps with not only getting people to kind of bounce around on your site, but it'll also show Google that you may be becoming an expert in something.
