[00:00:00] Bree: Sometimes content creation is super, super fun. And then other times it can feel really overwhelming or exhausting. And with that, I am so excited to introduce you guys to Shannon. This episode is full of inspiration, but also real talk. There are three things that content creators are struggling with that I feel like are the top things.
When it comes to social media. And so I dive in and ask Shannon questions on how to handle that, how to handle low engagement, how to handle it when we're not seeing growth or just freaking overwhelmed, a lot of it is mental, but then, you know, Low engagement. Is it the algorithm? Is it our content? Shannon dives into all of this in this episode, including what the number one thing she wishes all content creators knew.
This episode is so amazing if you are really looking to step up your game or even just change the game on social media and want to see your engagement go up. Then this episode is one that you definitely want to tune into.

Hello, Shannon. Thank you so much for being here. I've been following you for a while and I'm just so excited for our audience to learn about you if they're not following you already. So can you just give us a quick overview? Tell us who you are and what you do, who you serve and, um, where they can follow you while they're listening.
[00:02:27] Shannon: Yeah. Um, I'm Shannon McKinstry. I'm a social media. It's hard to put my title, but it's like content creator, social media manager. I do it all. Um, and basically I've worked with. Every industry under the sun. So basically I don't have a niche I work with specifically, but I work with brick and mortars. I work with coaches.
I work with you name it. I've worked with them. Um, but basically my goal is just to help you create content that gets in front of your ideal people, because it really all comes down to creating good content that resonates with your audience. And so that's my specialty and just helping busy business owners who I know don't have the time to be on these apps all day to get their life back and stick to what they're really good at.
[00:03:11] Bree: Yes. Oh my gosh. You, and you have a podcast. Can you tell us about your podcast as well? Because I'm like, we're on, they're on a podcast app right now. You guys can hop over and go subscribe to that one as well. Oh,
[00:03:21] Shannon: I would love that. Yes. Come hang out. Um, it's called good content with Shannon McKinstry.
They're 10 minute episodes cause, um, that's all I have time to do and I figured that's all my people have time to do. Yep. So it's great. And I just give every week. One quick thing I do almost every week is do a quick rundown of some viral Content going out there right now and I talk about how to pivot it or tailor it to your niche on top of that I just talked about what's working in the moment because again, it is forever changing.
So
[00:03:49] Bree: yeah, it's a lot of fun Yes, that is That is the name of the game right now. Everything is constantly moving and changing. And it's like right now, carousels are popping off again. And who knows what it'll be next week. No, your podcast is incredible. It is so inspiring. I love listening to it and gain so much information and just encouragement and all the things from watching you online.
So that's why I was like, please come on the show. I want everybody to hear about you. I want to talk about, you know, content creation in regards to social media. And I feel like if I had to name like three things that content creators are struggling with when it comes to social media, one is always going to be low engagement.
The second would probably be. Feeling stagnant and not seeing any growth. I hear that a lot. We're like, I'm posting consistently. I'm showing up. My numbers are not moving at all. I'm not reaching any new audience. And then that third one would be as a result of all of it feeling very overwhelmed and exhausted by it all.
So I would love to just pick your brain on these things and talk to you about the big challenges that creators are facing. And I'd love to start with the mental part. Because like that overwhelming exhaustion will bleed into everything else that we're doing. So what is your advice with this? Because I'm sure this is something you must hear all the time.
[00:05:17] Shannon: Yes. All the time. Um, the, the first thing I say is you don't have to post every day. Like, yeah, just like a personal trainer would probably not tell you, you need to run every day or that you need to do this every day. Like you don't have to post every day. None of my clients post every day. I don't post every day.
I have posted more, more frequently only because. My business now allows me more time for years. I did it only cause I've reached this point in my business where I can outsource more, I could, you know, um, my offers aren't as much one on one as they were, which when I was doing one only one on one, I couldn't post.
Oh my gosh. Are you kidding me? So now, so I think people see, well, Shannon, you're posting a lot more now cause I have the time and I am obsessed with creating content. So. There's that, right? Like I'm honoring the fact that I love to post content and create and help people. Like, that's just my thing. So my clients typically post four times a week, right?
So that could be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. That could, you know, depending on your audience, I even have clients who are like, they go dead on social from Saturday and Sunday and their business is just fine and they have hundreds of thousands of followers and everyone's okay. If you find your audience is really active on the weekends and you want to be there, then yeah, maybe skip.
Whatever Wednesdays and Thursdays, like it doesn't have to be every day. So I would aim for four to five times a week, maybe days that, you know, you're working cause you're already plugged in and repurpose, repurpose, repurpose. Five, four or five years ago, I would have been like, maybe repurpose every three to six months.
Now I'm like, Oh, you shared it two weeks ago. Sure. Because, oh yeah, first of all, only about five to 10 percent of your audience is seeing the content you create, right. Or that specific piece, maybe they didn't see it. Or if they didn't just say it in a different way. And I actually did a post on LinkedIn yesterday.
That's going kind of crazy, which is funny. Cause I was like, Oh wow, that's doing really well. It just says, you know, marketing gets a lot easier when you realize you're just saying five or seven things. It's dozens of different ways. Like that's it. So, and what I tell everyone before the pandemic, especially all of our content was like a mini masterclass.
Every single one of my posts, I was like, I got to save this person today. Like I would tell them everything to do on Instagram. Now I'm like, here's one thing to do. That's all our brains can handle. Our brain. We're consuming more. We're on more apps. We are just exhausted. Overwhelmed. So you're exhausted.
Overwhelmed. If you're listening. So is your audience. They are too. Yes. Exactly. So that's the biggest thing. Tiny, digestible, bite size, value, humor, messages, whatever it is. And report. Don't be afraid to say something you said a month ago again. So, um, I talk a lot about the four H's. Yeah. It goes so fast.
Yeah. Yeah. Just. It doesn't have to be that deep, like you just, you know. Well, something really quick that you can share today that they need to hear that would make them laugh or that they go, huh, that's really helpful. And then you're done. Like, that's it.
[00:08:14] Bree: Yeah. Sorry, I interrupted you. No, no, no.
[00:08:17] Shannon: You're fine.
So the four H's is a system I came up with or a method, whatever you want to call it, that I came up with because again, people are coming to me and they're like, oh, well this post needs to sell. This post needs to nurture. And I'm like, no. Yeah. All your content does all of it. Like, I don't like to put it in.
Thank
[00:08:33] Bree: you. It's so exhausting to think of like, okay, those different pillars.
[00:08:39] Shannon: It is. And then you have this pressure of like, it didn't sell. And what if it actually did something else because it tugged at the heartstrings and you didn't realize what, right? Like, So I always start with my clients or my audience's feeling.
I'm like, well, what do I want to do for them today? Okay. Do I want to help them today? Do I want to make them feel seen today? Or do I want to make them laugh? That's how I start my content. I'm like, which one? So if it's being helpful, I'm like, okay, I'll share a little tip. And then the caption, whether it's in a reel or a carousel, and then the caption, I will either expand on said tip.
And then I'll end with a call to action, whether it's, you know, hop on my email list, follow for more, like it doesn't have to be, you don't have to pigeonhole all your content into one little, okay, this is for selling, this is for growth. I'm like, they should all be doing all of it. And that doesn't make it, that's not to be intimidating.
That's like, because all of our content, the way that if you're doing it, right, it should make your people feel something. Yeah. And that's what gets them to buy. So it goes hand in hand. And if you're selling. Mm hmm. You got to tell a story. You got to make them feel something. Right. So it's like, why, why limit yourself to that?
So the four H's I have is helpful, which is again, tips, hacks, et cetera. Heard. Is that where you put yourself in their shoes? Right. So you're making them feel hard. Like if you're in mindset, lots of like those quotes that make them feel like, Oh my gosh, I needed that today. Or like reminders. I love doing little pep talks for people.
And then third is humor. And that's the one that's most intimidating to people. But I'm like, it doesn't have to be like comedian humor. It can just be like, my toxic trait is blah, blah, blah. And it's just like something silly. Like. It doesn't have to be like gut laugh, right? Okay.
[00:10:24] Bree: Cause my brain immediately goes to, I wish I was funny.
Like deep down, my deep desire is that I was like, this is Maisel. That's what I want to be in my brain is I want to be freaking hilarious. I am not, I am, I'm not. And so like when you said that, I'm like, but I'm not funny.
[00:10:39] Shannon: Well, and even like you say that, I'm like, that was funny. Like Mrs. Maisel, when you, when you're told you need to do something funny and then you go.
Okay. Channel your inner Mrs. Maisel and it still misses like that's funny, right? Like you could just joke about it. Like we're yeah, I don't know and I will say people love self deprecating humor on Instagram Because we are all the same. We're all like right, right I even did a story yesterday where I was I was talking to stories and my husband goes what cuz he thought I was talking To him and I froze up and I was like, so I was like, you can't look at me You can't talk to me what I'm doing out cuz I can't talk on camera in front of him.
I'm like, it's It's so awkward and embarrassing. It's so awkward. And everyone was in my DMs yesterday going, Oh my God. I'm like, I know. I was like, I'm like, go away. Like this is, um, that's humor, you know, and then the fourth is happenings. And that's the one that's kind of rogue. Like, Oh, I was on a podcast.
I was featured in this magazine. I went to this networking event, or I went to the Bahamas with my family. I had a bad day. So I went to target and now everything's fine. Like those happenings in your life or in your business. So those are kind of like, Those are cool just to help people get to know you more, your founder story if you will.
So those are the four pillars and you start there and each one of them can sell, grow, and nurture every single one if you put them right.
[00:11:53] Bree: Yeah, a hundred percent. So, okay, like from that, looking at, you know, like those other things that are like those top Problems, right? When people think of like, what are you struggling with on social media?
Low engagement. So, you know, if we're creating that content, right, is it the algorithm? It's our content. What do content creators need to look at in order to increase their engagement on the content that they are spending so much time on?
[00:12:22] Shannon: Okay. algorithm feel less intimidating, like it's this big monster robotic thing.
Your audience is your algorithm. Um, essentially. So when you hit post, it goes out to a small percentage of people who are already connected to you. And of course it will go to some other randoms. If your current audience hops on it, it's like, Oh my gosh. And they're sending it to people. The algorithm is going to eat it up.
And they're gonna be like, thank you for keeping people on the app. Thank you for keeping people here on Instagram. It's going to reward you. So that's why it's so good to know your audience. And this is why stories are my favorite thing in the world, because I will test out ideas. Like I just told you how yesterday I froze on stories.
Cause my husband was. looking at me, people went nuts. Like so many DMs. So now I'm like, okay, I'm going to turn that into content. Like the next time there's a silly trend, I'm going to be like, I'm going to poke fun at like what it feels like when someone walks in on you creating content. It's like, right.
So I make note of that. I, and I will write things down that people. DM me about, I often will just take a screenshot too. And then that way I'd get my screenshots folder when I'm stuck on something. And I'm like, I know I took a screenshot of something that I could, that people loved. You can also just go to your insights and stories and see what got the most interaction impressions, like.
I'm trying to think of the other data points in there that, um, I love when people tap the back button, cause that means they went back to watch it again. So you can kind of, you, cause the people watching your stories are the ones pricing your content too. Cause the algorithm has obviously shown that they like your content.
So if they're watching stories, they're probably seeing you every time you post. Um, yeah. So test things out in stories and see what resonates. And if something. You know, if they eat something up in your stories and are DMing like crazy, like you, you can pretty much know that your engagement will be higher if you make that a post.
So lean on your current audience. I ask my people all the time, what do you guys want to hear? What do you want to see? And they'll tell you, I'll do like four options for what I want to post and sometimes one is like 2%. I'm like, okay, you guys don't care about that, but it's also getting to know them. And this is where messaging comes in so big.
If you're new to this and maybe you can't afford a business or not a business coach But like can't afford a brand strategist yet like Go to people in your industry that you look up to look at their websites. What words and phrases are they using? Um, what are the testimonials saying? Because your audience will tell you what they need to hear and what they're struggling with.
Like you just saying the problems you hear is helping me understand my people better too, cause they have the same problem. So write those problems down and what's something uplifting. And if you can, Give them a pep talk or a reminder they need or give them a tip to help them. It's going to go crazy.
Obviously hooks play a big part. Like there's all that stuff, but at the, it starts
[00:15:10] Bree: with the idea. And sometimes it's not like, yes, hooks are great and stuff too. But I think of like, you know, some of the content creators I follow and I know that listen to the show are, you know, even like moms and they're doing, you know, content for other moms and there'll be something just in the video that's relatable.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm like, Oh yeah, that's kind of what my life looks like this morning, you know, or, um, somebody decorating their home for, you know, Thanksgiving and I'm like, Oh yeah, that's so cute. Like there's something that relatableness as well that plays like a huge role in it.
[00:15:48] Shannon: Oh yeah. I mean people, my stories are where they get to know, you know, I shared that we were at dinner last night.
It's like all that stuff. We're on Instagram to come, you know, connect with humans and I think as business owners, we forget that. Because we've been told value, value, and it's like, well, human connection's valuable too. You know?

That not seeing growth kind of goes hand in hand with that low engagement. And you talk on your podcast about getting your audience to care about your content and storytelling and personality. So how do all of those play into You know that low growth and low engagement. Yeah.
[00:17:54] Shannon: Okay. So My I have a theory I feel like we're just becoming a little bit more passive on apps.
Um Oh 100 right so like the whole like we felt the need to comment on every post back in the day Like we're kind of just doing this more so you've got to Like, tell them what to do. You want them to comment something, start the caption with that. You want them to drop whatever, you know, you want them to share it, start that in the caption.
Like, front load the caption with what you want them to do. It's almost like back in the day we had this call to action at the bottom of the post. Like, we were like, no, we gotta provide them this value. And then we gotta ask. No, it's like, ask for it. Yes. Yes. So, if you're really struggling, follow four more blank and blank.
That's your hook under a reel. But again, what I always ask myself, Brie, is like, and this is where you really gotta be self aware. Self awareness. Is key and mm-hmm . Also being self-aware of what your content does. So I will look at my content and go, what would I do with this piece of content if I was struggling on Instagram?
Yes. Would I save it? Would I share it? Would I comment? Would I, and that's, would I do anything with it? Would I wanna do anything with it? And if not, then, right. Let's figure something else out.
[00:19:05] Bree: You can talk about that for the whole rest of the podcast. Oh, because that is something I like. It's like hard to say, but like I, people will, you know, come to me for coaching and for advice and I'm like, would you engage with your own content?
If you wouldn't, it's okay, but that gives you an idea of what you need to start working on. It's like really tough love, and I really hate giving it to,
[00:19:32] Shannon: that's why I say it on podcasts.
[00:19:35] Bree: Okay, great. You can tell my audience and I'll tell your audience.
[00:19:39] Shannon: Exactly. I mean, cause again, would that get a lot of engagement on my thing?
Probably not. You know who would engage with that is people in my field. They'll be like, yeah, exactly. Me as coaches and mentors and stuff. We'd be like, yeah, tell them. But yeah, I mean, if you. Look at your content and say, okay, and I think everyone needs to have a social media buddy, right? Mine is Emily, my business partner that we co founded a membership together.
I even yesterday, and she has ADHD. Okay. So there's some things that I've created that I'm like, would an ADHD brain be able to handle this? Cause I know I look at it. I'm like, Oh yeah, it's cute. And then I sent it to her and she's like, girl, she's like, ah, and then I'll resend it like, perfect. And it was simply just the font.
Oh, yep. Interesting. Yep. So it's kind of fun to have someone who doesn't think like you or maybe is out of your field of view. My husband. Right. My husband is, my husband and Emily are the two people I go, does this make sense? Does this track? Is this too much? Am I, and then from there I'm like, okay, so now, and then I asked myself what I would do with it.
Once I make those little tweaks. And again, I tell everyone your two tweaks, two tweaks, like every time I do in the reels lab, whatever it is, I'm like, if you had just changed that and that, it would have gotten twice as much engagement. And sometimes it is the font in the placement. And that's where just studying viral reels goes really far.
Like, if, especially if there's a trend going on, like, why reinvent what the prompt is? Just plug in your words. It's, everyone's using the same prompt. You're not stealing. Right? Because a lot of these trends are the same. That's different. Yes. Um, if it's your own messaging, then obviously, even if someone's like, okay, let's say it's like a food blogger.
Obviously I don't share food on my account, but if it's a food blogger, But they had the hook here and then a message here and then I'm going to frame it the same way. It's going to be, right? Because it's like, well, if that went viral and if I just add my own spin on it for my own niche, like that's it.
That's it. So, and then from there you ask yourself, okay, would someone save this, share it? Right. And then that's your call to action. Now I often do several call to actions. I'm like, save this for your next Instagram post and share with a friend trying to grow on Instagram. I mean, right? Right. Like. It's not, I think we used to think that was so gross and icky, but it's like people appreciate it now because we are bombarded and consuming so much.
So times have changed. It's not icky. We're all doing it, and we want to know what to do with it. So you're just giving them a little, yeah, no, share this. So, typically, you know, anything kind of funny is going to get shares. So if it's funny, really lean on shares. Um, if it's educational, they're typically going to save it, and then they might share it with a friend, too.
Um, Yeah. And if it's something empathetic and they're probably going to share that one too. So, but you also want them to like and comment and that's where many chat comes in to save the day. A lot of times if you're trying to convert, but yeah, just encourage them and tell them what to do. Cause I used to see people use a call to action, like when's the last time you did it and how did you feel?
It's like no one has time to write their whole, don't,
[00:22:50] Bree: don't ask me to write a paragraph. Don't even ask me to write a sentence
[00:22:55] Shannon: and some people will. And that's great. But the majority of us. So again, we're more passive and a lot of us don't even want our names and comments on there.
[00:23:04] Bree: Oh my God. Isn't that something else to where you're like, now I think too, I'm like, okay, if I comment on something, who else is going to see it?
[00:23:13] Shannon: And what
[00:23:15] Bree: are they going to think about what I said about this thing?
[00:23:18] Shannon: Yup. Exactly. So it's like, it's wild. Give the non commenters something to do. Save it. Share it. Those shares are what Instagram loves to see the most. And that's. immediately double eyeballs. So, so there you go. Just lean on your past audience and ask for it.
Just ask, tell them what you want them to do after you have figured out what it is you would do with it.
[00:23:39] Bree: Yes, that self awareness, doing an audit on yourself. You don't need to necessarily hire somebody else to do an audit for you. You probably need to first start with doing your own audit. Yeah, exactly. A hundred percent.
What's one, like the number one thing you wish all content creators knew?
[00:23:59] Shannon: So I think just that, um, kind of like, I think what I already said it, but like that value is not just educational because I think so many creators think, okay, value, I got to bring value. I got to bring value. I'm like, value is a laugh.
It's a making them feel seen. It's right. It's all those H's. Um, I find a restaurant suggestion valuable. I find a cool thing on Amazon to avoid screen time for my kid valuable. Like, it's not that deep. We find a lot of things valuable. I find someone holding the door for me. And when I got a stroller, that's
[00:24:35] Bree: very,
[00:24:36] Shannon: that's very valuable.
Like, can you just help someone with the simplest, dumbest thing today? Then post it. Like I just, we got to over, and I said this on the podcast the other day. 10 years ago, we didn't overcomplicate this. We shared a picture of our latte and called it a day and people would say, where was that? And then they would go and they'd be like, thanks Shannon for telling me about this latte.
Like
[00:24:59] Bree: we're overthinking things and overcomplicating it so much,
[00:25:03] Shannon: so much. And literally I'm doing a real today, which is not my typical real. I'm like very actually nervous. This is where I get in my head about my skincare routine. Cause people keep asking me what it is. And my dermatologist was like, well, let's do a real together.
And I was like, okay, okay. It's not my normal content. We'll see if it lands. If it doesn't, I'll never talk about skin again, but like, it's a risk and it's okay. And I always tell people when something fails, be excited. Cause then you get to figure out why. And again, it's either, it's just was so out of your niche or like, it could have been the hook.
It could have been a lot of times I'll watch someone's real and I'm like, you should take the first 10 seconds out. That's where you, you talked too much in the beginning. Get to the point. You lost me. So,
[00:25:45] Bree: yeah. But then to that point, are you also, because I, what I hear a lot too is like, oh, I'm not posting because it has to be perfect.
Yes. And that perfectionism starts to creep in. And I'm like, just, you gotta just go. It's like, For me, I feel like it's putting in the reps and you have to like learn. So like when you're saying like, Oh, okay. If they would have taken out the first 10 seconds of that reel, it's like, Oh, I have to be perfect.
But then also on the flip side, I'm like, well, take it, cut the 10 seconds off and repost it.
[00:26:15] Shannon: In a week and watch it explode. Like I, cause again, I think I would always say, and I was guilty of saying this, I would say like, you know, repurpose a piece of content that did well. Now I'm like, also look at the ones that didn't do well and just figure out why and put it in a framework you see doing well right now.
And then you save it like the one yesterday I thought was gonna do better than it did and i'm gonna figure out why and then i'm gonna repurpose it in two weeks Because I know people need to hear it. So yeah, it could be a number. That's such a
[00:26:42] Bree: good point because I feel like well Like i'll do it. I'm like, oh this reel is so good.
And then it just was like And i'm like, what the heck? Yeah, what the heck?
[00:26:52] Shannon: So maybe we need to switch it find your Crappy pieces of content and repurpose those because they really got lost and people really didn't see it, right? So yeah,
[00:27:02] Bree: or if they saw it, they don't remember
[00:27:04] Shannon: exactly or maybe it didn't resonate them But now something in their life, maybe now they're launching something or now they've finally come out of their creative rut, right?
Maybe now they're like, okay. I'm ready Shan. I'm ready We also got to think like a lot going on in the world holidays are coming up. There's Christmas stuff everywhere It's I'm like, you know, we're all just like I haven't even decorated for Halloween yet Okay. And it's in a week. So like. Yeah. Yeah. I don't want to hear about your Christmas cookie right now.
But if they, if I see it in a month, I'm like, save it, share it. Let's go. Right. So a lot of it is relevance. Right. There's so much. But again, don't be hard on yourself. If like, I was like feeling mad about my reel not doing well yesterday and then I was like, Shannon, check in. Check in. Like it's not that deep, first of all.
And now it's just another opportunity to nail it. So yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:27:51] Bree: Oh my gosh.
[00:27:51] Shannon: And sometimes maybe it is the algorithm. Let's be real. There are going to be times where the algorithm just switches the timeline. It has happened to me so many times I will log in and I will, I will scroll through 20 and I'm like, I've not seen these people in three years that happens.
Sometimes it will switch up. Like, I don't know what they're doing, but I know they, they, you know, whatever. Um, and on days like that, I'm like, what the fudge just happened? And I will see my engagement tank. And there are those days they don't happen often. Yeah.
[00:28:18] Bree: Yeah.
[00:28:19] Shannon: So that's why I'm like, never blame the algorithm.
But on those days, if you see things being funky, just don't post. Like I'm like, why am I going to post when I can tell, I can tell the algorithm has
[00:28:30] Bree: just go do something else in your business
[00:28:32] Shannon: and it always resets whenever they do that. Like a day or two later, it all looks normal again. Like, but that has happened to me and I'm like, I've not seen, and it's like, I'm not seeing my normal people in my feed.
And when that happens, I'm like, they did something and I just, I just won't post. I'll just stick around on stories for the day. And then it goes back to what happened
[00:28:49] Bree: to me a couple of weeks ago. It's like, you've seen all of your, the posts from the people you follow. And I'm like, there is absolutely no way.
[00:28:55] Shannon: Right. Yeah. Yeah. I'm like, I would have had to
[00:28:58] Bree: been on here for days. I
[00:29:00] Shannon: mean, it's an app. It's going to break once in a while, you know, like, right.
[00:29:03] Bree: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Oh my gosh. Well, can you remind us name of your podcast? They can go hit subscribe, Instagram, and tell us about your, um, membership as well.
[00:29:18] Shannon: Yeah. So again, good content with Shannon McKinstry episodes. They're every Tuesday and they're short and sweet, just like something that I've noticed that week or that you guys have voted on that you want me to talk about. So it's a lot of fun. And by the way, like I'll get DMs from listeners being like, I took that prompt you did.
It went viral. So trust me, everything I share on there is like, there's no fluff. And then yeah, the reels lab, you, if you want support with reels specifically, I have other offers too, but since I know reels are what people struggle with the most, um, I created a membership that is. Every week you get a content drop and it's per industry.
So. Um, if you're a lawyer, you're obviously your content prompts will look different than the bloggers and the coaches, right? So like there's all sorts of different industries represented inside. You get five and then you get a couple bonuses if you want to go above and beyond, right? I only do five and they're based on the four H's.
So again, like every week I'm like, let's, let's hit those four H's. And then there's a script too. To get you used to talking on camera. And then there's a video each week where I walk through the prompts and tell you exactly how to edit, where to put your text. So essentially it's like if I was your, on your team as a social media, your marketing team, these are the five rules.
I'd be like every week, these are the five rules to create. And there's captions. So like, it just kind of takes away the pressure again, like you said, mental health part of it, like you no longer have to scroll for inspiration and then go into this, whole thing of imposter syndrome because someone in your field did a really cool reel.
Like come hang out with me. I got you
[00:30:51] Bree: love it. Oh my gosh. Oh yeah. We're going to link
[00:30:54] Shannon: reels lab. Sorry.
[00:30:55] Bree: The reels lab. You're good. I'm going to link all of those things in the show notes for you guys. So just click below, go check all of those things out. And oh my gosh, thank you so much for sharing all of this.

Challenges in Content Creation
Content creators face recurring challenges in social media, including low engagement, stagnant growth, and feelings of burnout. Shannon's insight on managing these obstacles highlights that mental fatigue can actually hold you back. Consider starting with realistic goals—like understanding that posting daily is not a necessity.
Strategize Your Posting Schedule
While consistency is important, posting every day isn't mandatory. Shannon recommends that four to five posts per week, paired with strategic engagement tactics, can be just as beneficial. She further emphasizes the value of repurposing content, suggesting that content shared two weeks ago can be reused, as it's likely new to parts of your audience.
Engagement: The Heart of Social Media
Understanding the audience as the algorithm is pivotal. Assess how your current posts resonate with your audience, and use stories to test ideas. Shannon highlights the importance of examining audience reactions—specifically, leveraging insights gained from DMs and story interactions to craft highly engaging content. Questions she poses to creators include, "Would I interact with this post?" and "What action does this content prompt?"
Creating Relatable and Impactful Content
Stories and personal anecdotes not only humanize brands but can also significantly enhance engagement rates. The emotional connection fosters loyalty and encourages interaction from followers who see a reflection of their own lives in your content.
The Four H's of Content Creation
Incorporating authenticity into your posts can make your content more relatable. Value in your content is not just educational. Shannon highlights the four "H's" in content—helpful, heard, humor, and happenings.
- Helpful content: tips, hacks, etc.
- Heard content: your audience feels heard from their perspective.
- Humorous content: entertaining, funny, and engaging.
- Happening content: highlighting what's going on in your life.
Overcoming Low-Engagement on Social Media
The algorithm feels intimidating, but really an algorithm is just your audience. When you know your audience and the type of content that they engage with, it's easier to hack the algorithm to make your posts get more engagement.
Consider using stories to test out your content ideas, then when they work, turn them into feed posts that your audience can engage with. You can also make notes of what people are asking you, responding to, and watching in your stories.
Continue to explore the authentic parts of your life and brand, then highlight that on social media to see what lands—even if it's not a major part of your brand (yet).
Engagement through Storytelling and Self-Awareness
We've become passive on social media—meaning we aren't commenting on everything or even reading everything like we used to back in the day. To get your audience engaged, front-load your captions with what you want them to do and make it clear.
It's essential to maintain a balance between self-awareness and audience demands. Consider reviewing and testing content strategies—being open to pivoting based on real-time feedback from followers.
Most of the time, your content is just two tweaks away from being engaging.
If you're a content creator, it might be time to reconsider your approach to social media. Shannon's advice is to break down your educational content into bite-sized, relatable segments; this can ease the overwhelming pressure to consistently produce viral content. By implementing her strategies and approaches to content, you can foster genuine connections and drive engagement across platforms.
