[00:00:00] One request that I get all the time inside of shift and bold fluence is to review somebody's media kit. And I love doing this, but one thing I have found is that there is always kind of a commonality between them all. So I'm going to walk you through some of those and just share with you exactly what I suggest having in a media kit.
[00:00:27] And what some of the pitfalls or common mistakes that I am seeing whenever I am reviewing them. The first thing is that they are all typically too short. And I'm thinking maybe this stemmed from like college us, whenever we had to create a resume and you're We're always taught to like make your resume as small as possible, which I, I don't fully understand.
[00:00:53] Um, still to this day, um, and I don't, I don't know that that's completely factual anymore, but anyways, we're not talking about resumes. We're talking about our media kit. So it does not have to be. Super small. It does not need to be one page. In fact, it shouldn't. It should be multiple pages, two pages at a minimum.
[00:01:14] That's one thing that I always see is nine times out of ten, whenever I'm reviewing somebody's media kit, I'm telling them that they need to add more pages. The reason for that is they're not giving themselves enough space to really show off what they are capable of. You're not giving yourself enough space to show off your photography, show off your work, show what you have done for other brands.
[00:01:36] Instead, you're just quickly sending them a little bit about you, your stats and the contact information, right? That's not going to cut it. What we need to do is make sure that we are standing out from the crowd. And when we don't understand who you are, we don't know your personality. We don't know. Your content and what you're capable of.
[00:01:57] Yes, I can go over to your social media or your blog and check out your work there. But then what's the point of sending me your media kit at all? I can go look up your numbers, right? So this media kit is more so. Kind of like, I guess, a presentation, like a mini presentation of like, here I am. I am amazing.
[00:02:15] This is why you want to work with me. That's what we want in a media kit. So two pages at a minimum. Okay. So your first page is the welcome. It's going to have a photo of you. It's going to talk about you and your audience. Yes, you. But what brands are coming to is, yes, they want you. They want your personality.
[00:02:37] They know that you're able to present their product in a certain light and in a certain way, but they also want to make sure that if they're purchasing content from you, for you to post on your own channel, they need to know that your audience is the right audience for them. They need to know that it is their target audience that is going to be a buyer.
[00:02:59] So you want to share about you, but make sure that you're also sharing about your audience. This is where it's good to have things like demographics, information about your audience that you can pull from analytics. That's a great place to put it. So on this first page, you can do that. You can also share your stats and share some links.
[00:03:17] So that's like the first page. It's like the welcome to me page, right? Welcome to my brand. And then the second page and thereafter. is where we're going to show off your work. So this is where you're going to have images. I want you to have case studies, logos of past brands that you've worked with.
[00:03:37] That's all going to go on this second page. And this is where you can see like, Oh, okay, this could turn into multiple pages. I don't want you to go and build like a 10 page media kit by any means, but I have seen people do like a very beautiful, successful three and four page media kit to show off their work.
[00:03:57] So if you want to think of like, okay, how can I break down, you know, it's, it's sometimes it's really hard, even for me as a graphic designer to sit down at a blank page and be like, Oh my God, where do I start? Canva has some amazing templates as you guys know. So check those out. But then if you want to just think of it in this way, one suggestion that I always give is to think of it as two columns and three rows.
[00:04:21] So think of your blank white page as like this grid. Okay. So it's got six boxes that are this, like the same size throughout the page, right? Now in every other box. Put an image or put some logos and then in the spot next to it put some text Okay, so if you think of it in the top row, you've got two boxes on the left hand side You've got a beautiful image showing off your work from when you worked with this brand and then in the right box You have some text that shares a case study that shares maybe if you can get a testimonial from a brand that would be amazing Sharing how it went sharing what the response was sharing some stats if they're really good, right?
[00:05:02] You That's where you can kind of show off what you were able to do for that brand. And then the next row below it, you could include, um, instead of an image in one box, you could do logos, and then you could talk in the other box about brands that you've worked with. And then in the box below that you could share another image and then you could share your contact information, right?
[00:05:22] If you only want to keep it to two pages and you don't have a lot right now, and you're just getting started, that's fine. You can start there. And then as you're going, you can add a third page and show off even more of your work and more case studies and what you're capable of. And notice that I didn't say to include your rates anywhere here, okay?
[00:05:43] If you want to include anything about your rates or about packages, Go ahead and do that. But what I suggest is don't include any concrete numbers. Instead, what I want you to do is put this package or this deliverable starts at X amount of dollars. So don't ever say like reels for 750. No, instead I want you to put Instagram Reel starting at 750 because we need room to negotiate.
[00:06:16] We need room to increase our rates and make sure that we are getting paid what our worth and doing an Instagram Reel that you don't have to leave your house for and is super easy is so much different than if you have to go travel somewhere or get a studio or anything like that, right? That's why we want to put starting at.
[00:06:39] Next things that I want to mention quickly is make sure that your fonts are legible. This is something that I give critiques on when I'm looking at them. Make sure I can easily read your fonts. So Don't use anything too scripty. Don't use anything too tiny. Make sure your contrast is okay. So don't put, you know, a white font on a pale pink background, right?
[00:07:04] Like make sure that there's enough contrast so that you can easily read the text. The second thing is use your brand colors. Like don't go, this is not the time to get adventurous with your colors. Stick to your brand. Stick to put your logo on there. Um, use your brand colors. And then the third thing is make sure everything is aligned correctly.
[00:07:28] So, if you, one of the tricks that I feel like maybe a lot of people don't know about, let's say you have three text boxes that are like on top of each other. And sometimes it's hard to like drag it in Canva and, you know, sometimes those little lines pop up and let you know if you're centered or not. But what you can easily do is click on multiple items and then click position and then click center or left align and it's going to line up everything beautifully.
[00:07:55] This is, it's not something that a lot of people think about again, it's because of my graphic design background. So I'm sharing this with you guys, but I'm telling you, it makes a difference when you are just like. more polished and everything is just like really crisp and clean and nothing is out of the line.
[00:08:14] It just takes that professionalism to the next level, which is what I want for every single one of you. So there's my tips for a media kit.
